Port Royal homes for sale belong toHilton Head Island’s only completely private oceanside community. They're located on the north end of the island where Port Royal Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean and this community was the point first sighted by Captain William Hilton when he first discovered the island.

Named from nearby waters of Port Royal Sound, Port Royal Plantation occupies approximately 1,200 acres and offers a desirable mid-island location. With approximately 900 single family homes and fewer than 100 undeveloped home sites (ranging from one-quarter acre to well over one acre), Port Royal is a mature but ever-changing community.

Retirees, families with teenagers and young children as well as couples enjoy an easy lifestyle here. Port Royal, though strictly a residential community, that is, no short-term rentals, does contain some condos inside the gate that rent long-term.

Port Royal Real Estate Development History

Initial planning for this community began in 1961; however, because the island’s growth was then concentrated on the south end this single-family community was slow to grow—all the better for its scant residents who wanted respite and privacy on the wide beaches instead of the activity that the island’s newly developing resorts would bring.

Port Royal Security

Port Royal’s main entrance is located off of William Hilton Parkway. The security gate for the residential side is manned 24-hours a day. Regular patrols of the plantation take place and entry is granted via a pass to guests with called-in permission from a property owner.

Port Royal Plantation Amenities & Activities

With easy access to shopping, popular cafes and restaurants, schools, the hospital complex, the airport and more, Port Royal Plantation is highly desirable. Amenities include the following:

Residents and their guests enjoy multiple private access points to the beach within the plantation along Port Royal Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. There are three miles of Atlantic Ocean shoreline, three golf courses (Robber’s Row, recently renovated by Pete Dye; Barony Course designed by George Cobb and Williard Byrd; and Planter’s Row.

A driving range, a putting green, four tennis courts (which are lit), miles of paved leisure trails and membership to the golf club is available. In addition, the Port Royal Beach House offers an Olympic sized swimming pool and kiddie pool, both of which overlook Port Royal Sound. Historic landmarks within Port Royal Plantation include civil war sites and old fort remains.
