Take a break from searching Hilton Head real estate and come celebrate the Gullah Geechee culture on October 5, 2024, at Lowcountry Celebration Park! The Fish and Grits Music Festival is a one day event showcasing Gullah Geechee cuisine, crafts and performing arts.
West African slaves on remote plantations and sea islands from Wilmington, NC to Jacksonville, FL gave birth the distinctive African American culture known as Gullah Geechee preserving much of their West African traditions, crafts, cuisine, music and Gullah creole language. Many of the Lowcountry’s most popular dishes were found in Gullah Geechee kitchen’s long before they made their way to trendy restaurants. Jazz, rock and the blues can all trace their lineage back to the melodies and rhythms heard in
the fields and praise houses throughout the Gullah Geechee Heritage Corridor.
The Fish and Grits Music Festival honors all things Gullah Geechee. Festival attendees can enjoy the tastes and sounds of the Gullah Geechee culture with a variety of Gullah dishes and an array of musical acts including, jazz, funk, folk, spoken word, R&B and more. Vendors will also be on hand showcasing Gullah Geechee culture through crafts, food, art, clothing and more.
