 Centrally located, Shipyard Plantation is an 800-acre gated community with private sub-communities of single-family homes, villas and condominiums. Beautifully landscaped grounds envelope its fresh water lagoon system, which is home to numerous turtles and alligators. The lots vary in size and are primarily serene and woodsy and may have lagoon or golf views along the fairways.
Villas are the major rental unit in Shipyard. Beachwalk, The Greens, Evian, Tennis Master and Colonnade. These popular villas and condominiums are available year-round and offer a myriad of amenities. Though not as prevalent, there are some private homes available during peak times of the year. There are three nine-hole golf courses, all well bunkered with large undulating greens which are reached after avoiding the many lagoons and ponds that accent its tree-lined fairways. The Brigantine, Clipper and Galleon nines all start from the clubhouse. There are also lagoons stocked for fishing, miles of jobbing trails and private pathways leading to the beach.
Tennis, however, rules at Shipyard Plantation and the tennis complex was designed by Billie Jean King. Now known as the Van der Meer Shipyard Resort, it was named by Tennis Magazine as one of the 50 greatest tennis resorts in America. Mostly clay courts, the resort offers tennis clinics and private lessons for adults. Three courts are indoors and are lighted. The only commercial enterprise in Shipyard is the Crowne Plaze Hotel. Shipyard has a private beach club and reserved parking for the resort’s guests.
Bicycling is very popular in Shipyard, and there are more than 12 miles of leisure trails within the plantation. It is also located within minutes of Dunnagan’s Alley, the home of excellent nightclubs, restaurants and shopping.
