sea pinesSynonymous with Hilton Head Island and the first eco-planned resort in the world, The Sea Pines Resort is the largest planned community on the Island. Encompassing miles of beach, salt-riddled tidal marshes, and more than 50 lakes, The Sea Pines Resort anchors the southern-most tip of Hilton Head Island along the Atlantic Ocean. Nestled on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Calibogue Sound, Sea Pines consists of approximately 5000 acres of lush semitropical topography, 1300 acres of which will never be developed. There are more than 500 seaside condominiums, luxury family villas, sprawling plantation-style homes and beach houses either used privately, available for rental or for sale. Lancaster Resort Sales specializes in property within The Sea Pines Resort and can guide you with your realty needs.

The heart of Sea Pines is Harbour Town, the picturesque lighthouse and yacht basin, home to million dollar luxury yachts and fishing boats. Harbour Town Lighthouse, built in 1969, was designed as a commercial venture rather than as a beacon for sailors. Today, families climb to the top of the lighthouse (110 steps!), and enjoy the panoramic view of the marina, Calibogue Sound, nearby Daufuskie Island and the 18th green of the Harbour Town Golf Links. Others choose to people-watch in one of the rocking chairs under the giant oak trees at the marina. There are over 20 unique shops and boutiques in Harbour Town.

South Beach, reminiscent of a New England fishing village, is set against a backdrop of weather-worn buildings draped in colonial blues and reds, accented with gas lantern lights. The Beach Club is edged by five miles of sweeping Atlantic beaches and fringed by forests of live oaks and towering pines. This is the gathering point for sand and water activities.

The Sea Pines Resort is both well-known and respected worldwide for its beauty, charm, character and family activities. World-class golf, tennis, fitness centers, and a 605-acre Audubon forest preserve, which is recognized as an important birding sanctuary by Audubon Society, comprise only a small part of this classic beach resort. The Atlantic Ocean is on the east and the Calibogue Sound is to the west. There is no building at The Sea Pines Resort higher than the tallest oak or magnolia tree.

There is direct access to five miles of pristine beach, the Harbour Town Yacht Basin, South Beach, the Beach Club, riding stables, 40+ miles of bike and leisure trails, three major shopping centers and a wide variety of restaurants. One can enjoy 54 holes of championship golf within the resort, including one of the world’s most famous courses, the Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the MCI Heritage of Golf. The Harbour Town Links is 6,973 yards, was designed by Pete Dye, in consultation with Jack Nicklaus, and was voted “Number One in South Carolina’ by Golf Magazine. The Ocean Course, the first course on Hilton Head Island, is 6,906 yards; and the Heron Point which has just undergone a multimillion dollar renovation (formerly know as Sea Marsh Course), at 6,515 yards, is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

The Sea Pines resort offers more than 20 miles of bike trails and nature paths, sailing excursions, hayrides in the Forest Preserve, horseback riding and pony rides, Gullah campfire storytelling, “Fun For Kids” children’s camp, day and night tennis on 23 clay courts, yoga or personal training on the beach, private-crewed sailing and dolphin-watch excursions, deep sea fishing charters, kayaking and canoeing, crabbing and freshwater fishing. A variety of educational programs exist, from “Loggerhead Turtle Search” to “Beach Discovery”. For the serious shopper, The Sea Pines Resort offers craft shops, art galleries, upscale boutiques, jewelry stores, and book stores.

Of historical significance, the Stoney-Baynard Ruins, located off Plantation Drive, contains the remnants of a grand antebellum plantation home built 1793 – 1820 built by Captain John “Saucy Jack” Stoney. The original house was 1885 square feet, built of timber and tabby; a mixture of oyster shells, lime and sand. In 1837, the Stoney Family declared bankruptcy and William Baynard acquired the property from the bank. The home was raided during the Civil War and Union forces made it their headquarters. It burned down shortly after the Civil War but traces of its heritage exist today and are a destination for many history buffs.
