Port Royal contains various sites of historical significance. At the start of the Civil War, the present Port Royal Plantation was home to the Confederate forces until they were driven out by the Union Army. During the Civil War’s Battle of Port Royal Sound, fifteen Union warships bombarded Fort Walker on the morning of November 7, 1861. This Confederate post was built in 1861 under the command of Col. William Heyward, and was captured by some 12,600 Union troops that same afternoon. Fort Sherman, built nearby in 1864, was an earthworks encampment to further strengthen the defense of the Island. Historical markers at Fort Walker Beach, the Beach House and the Steam Gun describe the events that took place.
Modern development of Hilton Head Island real estate was initiated in the late 1950s with the outset plans including an emphasis on preservation and nature. The original concept for Port Royal Plantation dictated that all residential development would be restricted to single family residences. This concept was later expanded to exclude any commercial development within the plantation boundaries. By 1966, a few houses, the Port Royal Inn, the original clubhouse, and the first golf course, Robber’s Row, were within the plantation. The clubhouse was the center of social activity in those first years with cookouts, a swimming pool, oyster roasts on Friday nights, Christmas tree decorating, dances, end-of-the-month golf parties and suppers. However, on Christmas Eve 1973, a fire destroyed the clubhouse. The Overlook was established in one of the nearby Port Royal Inn villas. These buildings were torn down when the current clubhouse complex, also called the Overlook, was built in 1983. The beach house was added, along with a popular swimming pool and tennis courts. Port Royal has long been a center of activity on Hilton Head Island. The Hilton Head Airport and Hilton Head Hospital are just two of the island’s main complexes which are situated in this area.
