Palmetto Dunes has almost three miles of Atlantic Ocean beach, 28 swimming pools and miles of lagoons. There is even a historic light tower, Leamington Light, complete with its own tales of ghouls and ghosts, which was actually built in 1879 by the US Coast Guard to guide shipping vessels into Port Royal Sound. In 1937, the Lighthouse was the site of Camp McDougal, which later became a WWII United States training station.
There are many rental options from which to choose in Palmetto Dunes and Leamington, the newest oceanfront development within the plantation. Oceanfront complexes do not rise above five floors, the limit on the island, so as to not be above the treeline.
