Folly Field, one of Hilton Head’s original neighborhoods, was developed before there was a bridge to the mainland. The original beach cottages were built in the early 1950s so as to attract more visitors to the thinly populated, yet quickly developing, Hilton Head. Folly Field real estate became the heart of a neighborhood for the locals---the business owners and their families. The beach was pristine and development was sparse. Building standards were stringent then (as now), and new residents and out-of-town owners appreciated the laid-back and quiet streets---it was about nature and quality of life. Centrally located, Folly Field homes for sale are convenient to everything Hilton Head has to offer. Homes and condos in this neighborhood are a casual and diverse mix of charming beach cottages, oceanfront mansions and rental condos. One of the Island’s few ungated communities, Folly Field is an eclectic neighborhood offering a mix of old and new, mod and old-fashioned. It is an Island gem. While plenty of locals still reside in Folly Field, it has grown over the years to include a fair number of non-resident owners who wish not to rent their homes short-term, but who prefer to spend the off-seasons here.
A short drive (or bike ride) will take you to the Island’s mid-point at Palmetto Dunes Resort and Shelter Cove, and on further to the popular south-end—Sea Pines Resort, Coligny Plaza, Forest Beach. North end purveyors include popular restaurants, boutiques, Hilton Head Island schools, Hilton Head Airport and our hospital and doctors’ complex.
There are two beach parks in Folly Field, one of which offers public beach access, restrooms, vending machines and a lifeguard on duty. The other is Islander Park and is primarily used by islanders and property owners.
There are a variety of homes for sale, vacation rentals and beach houses on the market—each with a commanding story to tell of memories made in the pristine sands of this tiny resort community. There are two beach parks in Folly Field, one is accessible to Folly Field residents and their guests, and the other is the Islander’s park, accessible with an annual paid pass.
Folly Field’s beach park has restrooms, a lifeguard on duty, a boardwalk, handicapped access, a playground, vending machines and a picnic area. During summer, Folly Field’s perfect mid-island location lends itself to Harbourfest at Shelter Cove, where fun and entertainment abound with arts, crafts, live music, and weekly fireworks. Shelter Cove Marina, golf, tennis, shopping and dining are within minutes from Folly Field, as are the public schools, hospital and library.
