The shape of Hilton Head Island is much like that of a high-top basketball shoe. Often, when Islanders are explaining a location in broad terms, we might say it is in or near the “toe” or the “arch”, etc. In those terms, then, Port Royal Plantation would be in the “heel”. This enviably located plantation has over 1,200 acres with 2,100 homes, most with oversized lots. Captain William Hilton arrived on the sandy shores of Port Royal, later home to Confederate troops who were stationed at Fort Walker until the Union troops invaded.

With easy access to schools, medical facilities, the public library, restaurants, grocery stores and a multitude of shopping, Port Royal’s amenities abound. Inside the plantation are three championship golf courses, as well as the Port Royal Racquet Club, and 16 tennis courts.

Port Royal homes are beautifully scattered among the live oaks and palmettos. From sprawling estates to luxury villas, marsh side homes, golf course views or oceanfront dreams, Port Royal has it all. The residential area of the plantation is separate and distinct from the hotel, villa and vacation rental area.

Port Royal is a cultured and gracious plantation on Hilton Head Island South Carolina. It is the only private Oceanside planned residential community on Hilton Head, designed solely for residents and their guests’ enjoyment. Plantation residents have access to quiet beaches without commercial infringement or condo rentals inside the gates. It was the second plantation developed on the island and is located along the northeastern curve of the island, bordering Port Royal Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. It is conveniently located to the Hilton Head Airport as well as the public schools and the Hilton Head Hospital.

Once you enter the elegant guard-gated entrance, you will note the varying residential style choices of Port Royal Plantation—the refined homes, cottages, and condominiums. There are approximately 900 single-family homes, with home sites ranging in size from ¼ acre to well over an acre.

With miles of bicycling and jogging leisure paths, several outdoor pools, a heated indoor pool and a private beach pavilion, Port Royal’s secluded shores are prime mid-island real estate on Hilton Head Island. History buffs might be interested in the fact, also, that the bluffs of Port Royal Plantation were first sighted by Spanish Captain Pedro de Quexos in 1521, and claimed later by English Captain William Hilton in 1663. Hence, the name of our island.

The present Port Royal Plantation was occupied by Confederate forces at the start of the Civil War, but were defeated in the Battle of Port Royal in 1861, whereupon 13,000 Union troops took control of Hilton Head Island. Historical markers at Fort Walker Park, the Beach House and the Steam Gun describe events that took place here and in the surrounding waters.
